The Lottery Response

The short story ‘The Lottery’ by Shirley Jackson has a theme of death because the lottery is focused on one woman or man to be stoned. In this village they aren’t unappeased to the stoning because it is their culture and they don’t see the problem with it because they were raised that way. The day of the lottery was celebrated like a holiday and no one found that someone dieing is sad or wrong. This Lottery was not for winning money, it was for one 'lucky' man or woman to be stoned by everyone in that town.
the symbolism is that when the lottery was done they stoned someone and that symbolising that the theme is death.

The Broken Mirror

Ow! Why in the world did you throw a chair at me? Look at me now! I’m broken, completely and utterly… broken. I will never be the same again. And it’s all your fault. Whats wrong with you? I am a perfectly good size and good quantity mirror. You use me every morning. Or should I say used because there is no way you can do your hair with all these cracks. Good luck. Oh, and be careful not to touch me the edges are sharp.

The Poisonous Berries.

Authors note:
The cause and effect on Katniss and Peetas decision to trick the council at the end of the 74th hunger games had many different outcomes for both of them. And if the circumstances were different the Hunger Games trilogy would be very different.

The new bestselling trilogy in America is The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. What if you were in the hunger games and the rules were changed at the last minute and you knew only one of you could get out alive. Katniss and Peeta were in the hunger games and at the last seconds of the game they announced that only one of them could get out alive. Katniss and Peeta just stood in the arena looking at each other trying to decide who should die. Instead of both dyeing they tricked the Council with a deadly berry so in the end they both got out alive. But that wasn’t the end for them.
Although Peeta and Katniss won the hunger games the president Snow was still not pleased. Snow was not ok with the fact that they tricked the council. Katniss knew what she was doing by threatening the council with the poisonous berry. She just didn’t know that this was going to affect the rest of her life. If she and Peeta hadn’t rebelled the 75th hunger games wouldn’t have been where they bring back all the previous winners. That was the council’s way of hiding that they want Katniss and Peeta dead for pulling the move with the berry.
Sadly, the 74th hunger games affected a lot of people’s lives. The war killed hundreds of innocent people. Especially Katniss, she lost her sister because she was trying to kill snow and survive. This affected her relationship with Gale in a bad way because he was the one who thought of the idea to blow up the area where Prim was. Even though it killed people and relationships, it brought Katniss and Peeta together.
Many things in this triliogy were big moves that affected the rest of the book but this move with the berry was the move that led to war. And then things that happened during the war led to more, but it all started with the last minute in the 74th hunger games. Now, you might be thinking if they never got called for the hunger games then it wouldn’t have happened. That is not true because one of them could have died and it would have been fine. If Katniss took her life Peeta would have been extremely depressed. Maybe would have gone mad only this time because of losing Katniss. Or if Peeta took his life Katniss would have probably ended up with Gale and would have regretted for the rest of her life for letting Peeta die. But that didn’t happen. They both lived, Snow was not OK with it, and there was war, people died, and Katniss ended up with Peeta.
Even in real life we make decision that end up affecting the rest of our life. One decision that you don’t think that long and hard about change a lot in your life. Not all decisions are for the bad. Some think about something and when they take action it affects their life in a good way. Just like Katniss and Peeta they made a decision that affected them and others life greatly and terribly.

The Ways of the DNA fingerprinting.

Everyone is different in their own way, all different interests, looks, style, personality and DNA.  Unless, you are an identical twin, your DNA is one of a kind (Online).  Your DNA can be found in your blood, a strand of hair, or semen in case you are a suspect in a crime (Defending.com ). Finding out your DNA could also be used to for paternity or maternity. The finger printing process is a very useful tool for investigations for many reasons.

In 1915 the fingerprinting process established the first forensic official organization with the IAI (International Association for Identification). Ever since this was first invented it has been the most commonly used forensic examination casework. This process is the most accurate and easiest way to either solve or get farther in an investigation. From 1686-1882 there were several astronomers and scientists that noticed the differences between each person’s fingerprints, but never connected that to identification. Finally, in 1883 Mark Twain wrote a novel, “Life on the Mississippi” a murderer was identified with fingerprinting. From there, fingerprinting and the DNA process kept growing. Then in 1905 the U.S Army started using fingerprints. 1907; the Navy. 1908; the Marine Corps. Today, all 50 states have their own AFIS databases.  (Greg Moore)
Even today, many investigations today use fingerprinting. It is one of the most useful forensics to use. When there is an investigation usually the guilty suspect touched something or left some piece of evidence at the scene. Either it’s a strand of hair left on the carpet, one simple fingerprint left on a piece of evidence, the investigators can use the fingerprinting process to link the fingerprint to the DNA of the guilty suspect. This process will always be useful because people are breaking the law all the time; drinking under aged to a murder.

To inspect a piece of evidence you could use an ultra violet stick. For example, a FBI fingerprint expert was examining a piece of duct tape from the Casey Anthony Case and was looking for fingerprints that could lead to who was guilty but it led to finding an outline of a heart sticker. Although they did not find fingerprints, it still led to finding a very important piece of information for the case (Richey).
Overall, the fingerprinting process is helpful in many way in the past, present, and for the future. Ever since this process was created it was useful, and it will continue to be useful for upcoming investigations. And for the maternity/paternity process it will help families reunite. This is an unbelieveably useful for so many reasons. Without this process, murders, break ins, and much more investigations would not have been able to be solved. Which means the guilty suspect wouldn’t get caught. Our world would be filled of much more mysteries.

Big Yellow Field Below

       Authors Note:
In My class we studied two poems and found the meaning of them. Once we understood we listening to the songs to see how they resembled and what we thought. This is my response from after listening to the songs.

The two songs that we just listened to were 'Big Yellow Taxi' and 'Field Below'. Before we listened to these songs we read and discussed the words. We found that both poems had something to do about nature or missing home. The overall message was not to take things for granted and that you don't know what you've got until its gone.
'Big Yellow Taxi' was  actually a familiar song to me. I have heard the boy version of the song.  But the tone and the mood were not like the poem. The poem showed evidence that it might be a sad or slower song. But the song was actually a very fast tempo, happy sounding song. If you heard the song without listening to the lyrics it would be different. I think this song was probably really popular when it cam out and people didn't really study the lyrics like we did it so not many people understand what the song meant. As for Big Yellow Taxi, since the meaning of this song was about the darkness and how she was lonely in this big city that has no nature. The beat and the tempo was in match that I thought it would be. Slow, and sad was what I was going for and that’s what it sounded like. This song did not surprise me when I heard it. The beat and tempo was perfect for the meaning of the song. I think I would have never heard this song unless it was in this class.

The Greatest Tragedy of 1912

Author’s Note:
1912, The Titanic on the White Star Line started on their Journey to Southampton, England, and New York City. The Titanic was known to be the biggest, greatest, and safest ship in the world, until it sunk.

“She watched with Horror as it slipped lower and lower into the dark waters, upended, and finally disappeared into the deep.” This Is a quote from Titanic Love Stories by Gill Paul. The Titanic sinking was a horrendous event that killed hundreds of people. And for the ones that got out alive were scarred for life. Just thinking, reading or watching the film you can feel how petrifying that would have been. Innocent children, newly wedded couples, or just the people that wanted an extraordinary trip, ruined, destroyed, gone.
The ship was part of the White Star Line, so was the ship that saved the passengers who were on the lifeboats, Carpathia. Carpathia was not bigger than the Titanic though. This ship was 45,000 tons, 882 feet, 8 inches/268 meters. And the height was 60.5 from the water line, but from the feet keel to the top of the funnels it was 175 feet tall. Although the Titanic had 4 funnels, only 3 of the funnels were functional, the fourth funnel was added on to make the ship look more impressive. The Titanic was capable of holding a capacity of 32 lifeboats. They only added on 20 lifeboats. Having 12 more lifeboats would have been so much more helpful to the families that couldn’t get on in time. There were 2,227 passengers onboard the Titanic. About 700 passengers survived the wreck. That is around 1,527 children, parents, animals, newly married couples, or crew workers that did not survive.
Built and ready, the Titanic set out on its voyage on April 10th 1912. The passengers had 4 days living luxuriously on the Titanic, until caption E.J Smith saw the Iceberg. They spotted the iceberg when it was 500 yard away. It takes 850 yards for the Titanic to stop. With fear all around the ship, people boarding the lifeboats, not knowing where you children are, or just in shock of what is coming, the titanic hit the iceberg at 11:40 PM on April 14th. The Titanic had completely sunk at 2:20 AM on April 15th. The ship had gone completely vertical having people falling from the top all the way down into the dark waters. This was like going on a ride that you really did not want to be on. And was not the most enjoyable ride of the passenger’s life.
There were 2 films made that were based on the Titanic. The first film was produced by Charles Brackett, in 1953, and the length was 93 minutes long. Unlike the more modern film produced by James Cameron, this was not completely based on a love story of the passengers on the Titanic. More of the film was based on the ship sinking and commotion and what was happening, how people were reacting and more of the facts of the Titanic. James Cameron produced the 194 minute movie in 1997 The Titanic. This movie is coming back into theatres in 3D. Society finds this version of the story more interesting or more worthy of watching because it has a romantic story line to it. Or even because of the effects it has. Watching the movie feels like you are really there.
The experience of being on that ship scarred hundreds of the survivors. Even though the Titanic was one of the longest, tallest, safest, ships there were. It sank, and killed hundreds. The crew saved as many as they could but when the ship sank at 2:20 there was nothing more they could do but get the survivors to the sister ship Carpathia. There were 2 movies based on this horrendous tragedy and received thousands of dollars from them. Books have been written based on the love stories, event, and lives of the ship and survivors and have made a lot of money. Although this was a money making event, it killed innocent children, newly wedded couples, or just the people that wanted an extraordinary trip, ruined, destroyed, gone.
